Alexis de Tocqueville Society
The
Tocqueville Society was founded in honor of the French
historian, Alexis de Tocqueville, who wrote about the
boundless American spirit of volunteerism in the early 19th
century. The Tocqueville Society strives to deepen
individual support of the United Way and its service to the
community. Alexis de Tocqueville appreciated, applauded and
forever immortalized the compassionate, passionate spirit
that lives in America’s heart.
The Tocqueville Society exemplifies these qualities in local
communities. Three elements of democracy which Tocqueville
so admired in American society were liberty, equality, and
the spirit of neighbor helping neighbor. Tocqueville hoped
that by achieving these elements of democracy, all people
would choose to pursue freedom, knowledge and prosperity.
Members of the Tocqueville Society pledge $10,000 or more to
the annual campaign of the United Way of Northwest Arkansas.
As a Tocqueville member, you help the United Way fulfill its
mission of improving lives by mobilizing the caring power of
our community. Your gift gives hope and helps affect changes
that matter most to people in our area. United Way of
Northwest Arkansas is both honored and proud to have your
vision, leadership and commitment.
If you’d like to be a part of this celebrated group and add
your name to the list below, contact the
United Way office at 479-750-1221 to make
your pledge.

“When an American asks for
the cooperation of his fellow citizens, it is seldom
refused; and I have often seen it afforded spontaneously,
and with great goodwill.”
Alexis de Tocqueville
from “Democracy in America” Volume I 1835

“As soon as individuals with a cause find each other out,
they combine. From that moment, they are no longer isolated
people, but a power seen from afar, whose actions serve for
an example, and whose language is listened to.”
-Alexis de Tocqueville
