Inspiring Us This Week: Area Agency on Aging-Meals on Wheels

Often times our community focuses on the problems that we can see. Problems with lack of transportation, access to healthcare, or a lack of quality daycare programs without mile long waiting lists. Area Agency on Aging is “Inspiring Us This Week” through the Meals on Wheels program that they provide. Through this program, the agency is touching a population of our community that may go unnoticed-frail, elderly citizens, often who are home-bound. The staff and volunteers at the Meals on Wheels program are truly a light in the lives of the individuals they serve. Check out a couple of stories about how the program is more than just a meal for the clients served.

Mr. X and his family thought his only option was a nursing home. He could no longer prepare himself a hot meal. A neighbor told him about the Meals on Wheels program. We started delivering him a meal Monday through Friday. He loves the visits from our volunteer drivers and now that he has his strength back he even visits the senior center. He is what our program is about. Because of Meals on Wheels he gets to age in place because truly, there is no place like home.AAOA2

We have a client in Farmington who was able to receive home delivered meals and not be placed on a waiting list thanks to the support of the United Way. When I did her first home visit, I took a hot meal with me. She had a half of a bag of pork rinds and stated that she was okay. She was eating those until I could get there. Senior hunger is a reality in our community and we are grateful for the support we have received from the United Way of Northwest Arkansas.AAOA1

The Meals on Wheels program provides over 650 meals to elderly in Washington County. That equates to more than 75,000 meals per year! This service allows elderly citizens to maintain independence and safety in their home.
