Volunteer Income Tax Assistance
(VITA)
United
Way is committed to improving financial
stability. Part of this includes helping
hardworking people obtain free tax preparation
and filing services as well as qualify for the
Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and other
credits. United Way of NWA partnered with
several agencies to for the Northwest Arkansas
raise awareness about the availability of
Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites,
and the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC).
VITA sites are community-based locations that
allow workers -- making less than $49,078 in
2011 -- to receive free tax preparation
assistance from IRS-certified volunteers. Many
workers do not utilize free tax services because
they assume refunds will be delayed. Instead,
they turn to expensive “quick money” offers of
refund anticipation loans that take larger
percentages of their refund money in fees.
United Way provided easy access for taxpayers to
make tax appointments and tax site referrals
through our 211 resource hotline. 211 staff
answered over 600 calls inquiring about free tax
services and booked 400 free tax service
appointments!
